Work

About the artist

In Berthold Reiß’s work there is the pictogram as pictorial form and some narratives as content. The linguistic as well as the visual signs appear transparent and at the same time “opaque”, i.e. the light does not pass through them and therefore they are dark. Despite all legibility they also stand for themselves. Pictures on paper and on canvas, which were shown in our exhibitions, were created over a period of several years. They all have titles and often refer to narratives. But their visible qualities are sometimes still to be read differently from these linguistic references of the artist. Some look like stained glass windows, others show horizon and depth. There are views from above, but also looks upwards. What one discovers is often organised in a contradictory way or makes one think of a context that is large enough for contradictions. The arabesque appears in many of the more recent works. This tendril ornament was created in late antiquity. But this past only comes into effect beyond what we can name, even beyond the abstraction we know.
