In the exhibition “Nebensonne”, the Cologne-based sculptor, installation artist and sound performer Julia Bünnagel shows a selection of new sound sculptural works. In an intermedial installation of processed records, light, sound and objects, she arranges the gallery spaces into a space of tension of two- and three-dimensionality, of light and shadow, of mass and emptiness.
Her works oscillate between installations, written images, music, objects or actions. The physical processing of material is always the basis of her work, whether in sound, typography, sculpture or installation. She calls her artistic work “KlangBildHauerei” (sound-image-sculpture), because her sculptural and physical actions are always audible and visible.
Julia Bünnagel (*1977) is a master student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Her cross-genre works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, such as the Pori Art Museum in Finland, Marta Herford, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Kunsthaus Kornelimünster or Arthena Foundation / Kai 10, Düsseldorf.
She has received numerous prizes and scholarships at home and abroad, including the Schloss Ringenberg Residency Scholarship and the NRW Women’s Cultural Office Scholarship in Yerevan, Armenia (2014). She received working scholarships from the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn in 2019 and 2021 and a project scholarship from the Kunststiftung NRW in 2013 and, as an extension, a working and research scholarship from the City of Cologne in 2020. In 2018, she was awarded the Luise Straus Prize of the Landschaftsverband Rheinland and honoured with a major exhibition at the Landesmuseum Bonn in 2020.
